Power racks, half racks and squat stands
What the frame names mean, how the safety systems differ and which measurements belong in a room plan.
A power rack supports a free barbell on adjustable hooks and provides a place to install safeties. The useful comparison is the complete lifting configuration: frame, hooks, safety system, anchoring and the room left for the lifter.

A 195 cm cage supplied with J-hooks, flip-down safeties and a multi-grip pull-up bar. It uses ATX’s smaller 500-series frame.

A full cage has front and rear uprights joined around an internal lifting area. A half rack leaves the lifting area open and normally uses forward-reaching spotter arms. Squat stands use two bar supports; they may be independent or joined by a base. A folding wall rack attaches to a suitable wall and changes depth when stored.
These names do not define a universal safety rating. A half rack with long feet can occupy more floor than a shallow cage. Compare the actual assembled system and intended lifting position, rather than counting uprights.
| Format | Space to measure | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Full cage | Internal depth plus complete base | Safeties must span the intended lifting area |
| Half rack or stand | Base and forward spotter arms | Open sides and anchoring requirements |
| Folding wall rack | Open depth, folded depth and wall fixings | A folded frame still needs room for the bar and bench |

Measure the barbell and the person as well as the steel
External rack width is only part of the width you need. Place a bar at the planned height and leave room beyond both sleeves to slide plates on and off. Check doorways, garage tracks, lights and the lowest ceiling obstruction. Pull-ups require headroom above the bar; overhead lifts also need clearance for the loaded plates.
Internal depth determines the room for a squat walkout. For benching, check whether the bench’s rear foot can pass the lower crossmember far enough to place the bar above your intended unrack position. A comfortable flat setup may become awkward when the bench is inclined.

Safeties and load ratings
J-hooks hold the bar before a lift. Safeties support it if the repetition cannot be completed. Pin-and-pipe bars, flip-down beams, straps and external spotter arms differ in their mounting and usable catch area. Set and test the intended arrangement with an empty bar before adding weight.
A rack-wide number does not establish every attachment’s limit. Ask for separate ratings for hooks, safeties and the pull-up bar, and whether a published number is a working load or a static test. Follow the exact rack instructions for anchors, stabilisers and exercise restrictions. Check which attachments the rack supports before buying them.

Australian configurations worth understanding
ATX’s PRX-510 is a 195 cm option; its PRX-660 is taller and uses a different frame series. Force USA sells MyRack as a base to which the buyer adds fittings. AlphaFit offers configurable Australian-made frames. With MyRack, choose the fittings separately. With either ATX rack, check which fittings come with the frame.
Compare delivered totals for the rack, a complete safety system, compatible bar and plates, bench and the attachments you actually expect to use. Keep the model code and assembly instructions with the purchase: they make later attachment and replacement-part searches much easier.
