Bumper or steel plates: build a usable set

Choose the pairs you need, leave room on the bar for collars, and add small plates for gradual increases.

How I choose equipment About buying links

My verdict

The Australian 90 kg Echo bumper package, plus change plates, is my starting point for a general kilogram setup. Thin iron discs suit controlled powerlifting when sleeve space is tight. Use bumpers on a suitable surface for lifts that involve dropping the bar.

The shortlist

Rogue Echo 90 kg set with two each of 10, 15 and 20 kg bumper plates
A straightforward kilogram starting set

Rogue Echo Bumper Plates — 90 kg set

The Australian 90 kg set contains 10, 15 and 20 kg pairs. With a 20 kg bar that totals 110 kg before collars, but smaller pairs are still needed for useful progression.

Include small plates from the start

The lightest pair in the Echo set adds 20 kg to a bar. You can rearrange its plates for some intermediate loads, but a bench programme using 2.5 kg total increases needs smaller denominations.

Pay for accuracy when it serves your training

Ordinary strength work does not automatically need calibrated discs. They become more relevant when you want precise kilogram loading, powerlifting-style plates or more weight on a crowded sleeve. Bumper construction serves a different job when the bar will be dropped.

Eleiko’s linked IWF training item identifies a single 10 kg denomination with a published ±0.5% tolerance. Build the quantity and remaining pairs into the quote before comparing that listing with an entire bumper bundle.

Use the same plate list for every seller

  • Write each denomination and quantity, including change plates. A total-weight figure alone can hide an awkward mix.
  • Include collars in the available sleeve length.
  • Use a bar, plates and surface suitable for the way the weight will be lowered. Rubber coating alone does not make an iron plate a bumper.
  • Obtain delivery for the full order. Plate freight can change which retailer gives you the better complete purchase.
