Fixed dumbbells: heads, handles and building a set

How rubber hex, round urethane and other fixed weights differ, and what a full set means for space and delivery.

A fixed dumbbell has one permanent nominal weight. It is ready to lift without an adjustment mechanism, making it useful for shared training and rapid changes between sets. The trade is the amount of equipment you buy, store and move.

Shape and coating are separate decisions

“Hex” describes the head shape; “rubber” describes its coating. A six-sided head has flat resting faces that resist rolling. A round head needs a suitable shelf or cradle. Neither term tells you whether the handle is straight or contoured, whether the heads are welded or forged, or what loads the storage rack can carry.

Rubber and urethane are different materials. Urethane is often sold for commercial fitouts, but the coating name is not a measured durability score. Read construction and care instructions for the specific model. For example, SMAI’s Apex range uses rubber on the grip itself, while Rogue’s urethane design has a straight chrome handle. The surface touching your hand can differ as much as the head.

Choose the weights before choosing a rack

Start with the pairs your training actually uses. A continuous run looks tidy but may put money into several weights you seldom touch. It is reasonable to own a few fixed pairs for frequently repeated movements and use adjustables for the rest. Two people exercising together may value duplicate common weights more than a heavier top end.

Add the whole set before ordering. Ten pairs from 5 through 50 kg in 5 kg steps contain 550 kg of dumbbells. That calculated total excludes the rack and packaging. A list headed “5–50 kg” is therefore very different from two 50 kg dumbbells, which contain 100 kg in total. Confirm singles versus pairs on every order line.

Weight accuracy and handle fit

A printed 20 kg label is a nominal value. If a seller publishes a tolerance, calculate what it means at the selected weight and compare like for like. A percentage tolerance allows a larger absolute difference on heavier dumbbells. Do not infer calibration from a high price or a commercial label.

Test grip comfort where possible, especially if two users have different hand sizes. Check the available space between the heads, whether the handle thickens at the heavier end of the range, and whether a knurled or rubber grip suits the way you train. A matching visual design does not guarantee one handle diameter throughout the catalogue.

Storage and delivery are part of the purchase

A rack’s advertised pair count depends on dumbbell size. Measure the shelf rails and spacing against the particular heads and handles, then obtain a load rating for the shelf and whole frame. Leave room to approach it while holding a weight in each hand; its catalogue footprint is not the full working area.

Plan how each item reaches the room, including steps and narrow doors. Keep the supplier’s packaging and evidence of any arrival damage until the order is checked. Clean the finish according to its care sheet: a method suitable for chrome may be unsuitable for rubber grips. Avoid treating a coating as protection against unlimited dropping or an unsuitable floor.
